Port operators raise concerns about e-call up system, advocate overhaul

  Guardianng   Today, 4:28 a.m.

He said there was no need to constitute a state government Task Force team, since the presidential Task Force team could not resolve the situation at the port corridor, adding: “They create nuisance within the port corridor and there is no way we can have the free flow of traffic within that corridor because the amount of money each vehicle is paying before they can be allowed to pass the port is as much as N200, 000 to N300, 000 per vehicle. He questioned why 7, 000 trucks have been certified to enjoy the electronic call-up system out of the over 60, 000 trucks operating in the state port corridor, alleging the decision raises suspicion and amounts to a deliberate effort to shortchange the genuine stakeholders in the sector. Musa said it is becoming more obvious that the government is not showing interest in removing the gridlock, but is only interested in generating revenue through the sector, adding that constituting a taskforce team within the port corridor is just another way of creating money for certain people. “If the system changes and the same people or persons are still involved in the process, then you should expect some level of frustration because those people will scuttle the system for them to go back to basics and begin the collection of those said monies, which had initially stopped. The e-call up system is a perfect idea but you cannot build that same system around someone who used to get N50,000 or N100,000 from the system days before the system changes. He suggested the outsourcing of the system to a competent private organisation that could drive the project successfully without fear of compromise and sabotage, adding that some personnel of the government agencies were unhappy with the innovation as some of them have fed fat from the gridlock. He said the NPA and the state government should ensure there is transparency in the process while urging them to publicly provide the criteria for the selection of the 7, 000 trucks, as well as make known the owners of the trucks.

INEC pledges to conduct better elections in 2023

Initiatives that reconciled Ortom, Mohammed

  Guardianng   Today, 4:25 a.m.

Back home, even though some political forces continue to fan the embers of bitterness and crisis in Rivers State, Governor Wike has been busy, not only in providing succour and compensation for families who lost loved ones as a result of the politics of war and wicked activities of certain political actors in the last elections, he has also started the process of seeking sustainable peace and reconciliation in the Eleme/Ogu axis, by releasing N400m for the resettlement of the exiled Ekporo people successfully in their abandoned Eleme homestead. Briefing journalists after the successful reconciliation meeting, both Governors Ortom and Mohammed thanked their host Governor Wike for not only arranging the peace meeting, but also graciously offering his home as the place where such a contentious national matter had been resolved and also their colleague, Governor Fintiri for agreeing to be part of such a monumental meeting with far reaching implications for the continued sustenance of peace in the country. While some political mischief makers and well known anti-peace advocates will quickly dredge up the warped argument that Governor Wike’s reconciliation initiatives are predominantly within the confines of his own political party, PDP, many discerning analysts are of course quite aware of the greater negative implications of certain situations on the nation, if Governor Wike had not intervened with bold and unwavering leadership. Governor Wike has also exhibited great concern and willingly made admirable reconciliation overtures in political crisis across the geo political zones of the country, in order to ensure that such conflicts do not explode in conflagrations that can cause serious damage to public life and harm to innocent citizens. Those who have followed Governor Wike’s political trajectory will concur that he is arguably the only Governor and most notable political figure in the country who has singularly offered and willingly submitted himself to explore and entrench peace and reconciliation across all divides. Many Nigerians are still expressing gratitude to Governor Wike for averting what would have devolved into a potentially bloody situation, when he succefully intervened and completely achieved overwhelming peace and reconciliation in the run up to the 2020 Edo State Governorship election, by strategically urging party leaders to sacrifice the entire structure, essence and reputation of PDP on the alter of peace, as an alternative platform to an embattled Governor Godwin Obaseki. As a true nationalist and a leader who believes in the unity and peaceful co-existence of all Nigerians irrespective of ethnic and religious differences, Governor Wike has continually presented Rivers State as a role model for harmonious co-existence by ensuring that sustainable peace is maintained amongst the diverse ethnic, cultural and religious interests that live and operate in the state. The verbal brickbats which had rapidly degenerated into acerbic and vitriolic exchanges, raised regional tensions dangerously and brought the nation to the brink of a potentially encompassing countrywide combustion, had finally been addressed and amicably settled in the country home of Governor Nyesom Wike, with the active participation of Governor Ahmed Fintiri in the peace parley. Duke said: “Today, we are celebrating many things that Governor Wike has done, the development of a community, the prosperity that will be brought in, leaving the community better than he met it and of course, we are saying thank you that we have a leader who is very rare to find in our country. That is why it did not come to many as a surprise, when former Cross Rivers State Governor, Donald Duke, while commissioning the recently delivered brand new milestone Okoro-Nu-Odo Flyover project, completed by the Rivers State Government, paid glowing tribute to Governor Nyesom Wike, declaring that he has become a role model in Nigerian politics for his prudent use of resources for quality service delivery and boldness in speaking truth to power. The acrimonious relationship between the Governor of Benue State, Samuel Ortom and Governor of Bauchi State, Senator Bala Mohammed, provoked and exacerbated by the seemingly uncontrollable activities and excesses of suspected herdsmen in the country, had been resolved with great candour, sincerity, understanding and collective acceptance. Even the revered Oba of Benin, Oba Ewuare II, took time out to applaud the contribution of Governor Wike for his bold leadership, courageous intervention and amicable resolution of a crisis which would have transfomed his kingdom into a battlefield and disrupted the peace of the State considerably. Even the underhand attempts by some unscrupulous politicians to cause disaffection between him and his Bayelsa brother was strategically addressed by allowing due process and a Supreme Court judgment to resolve a potentially contentious matter and nip whatever mischievous intents of political opportunists in the bud. look forward that the federal government should stoop down to conquer by accepting that, yes, they have failed, so that together the States and the local governments can come together to find a way of finding a lasting solution to this country. His well reported intervention in the South West PDP crisis is already yielding dividends and his bold, strategic suggestions in the South East, both in the wake of the decamping of Governor Umahi of Ebonyi State and in the run up to the November 2021 Governorship election in Anambra State, have ensured that all the contending interests are going about their affairs legally and peacefully. Like what the Governor of Bauchi and Governor of Benue said, we don’t want the inefficiency, we don’t want the lack of capacity of the Federal Government in handling the issue of insecurity in the country to rub on us. We must come together as brothers and sisters who have no other country than Nigeria, to work together towards a common cause that will solve the problem that we have,” the Governors said.

Messi to Paris: Barcelona's nightmare, and PSG's unattainable dream?

  Guardianng   Today, 4:15 a.m.

’s existing after-tax salary is 30 million euros ($35.8m) a year while Mbappe’s was due to rise to 11 million euros this year. The latest Deloitte Football Money League put their revenue last season at 540.6 million euros, a drop of almost 100 million on the previous season. A move to one of Spain’s giants was long seen as the pinnacle for any player, but times have changed, as proven by Neymar’s transfer to Paris for a world record 222 million euros ($264m at the time) in 2017.PSG and City are probably the only likely destinations for Messi should he leave. “Great players like Messi will always be on PSG’s list,” insisted the French champions’ sporting director Leonardo in a January interview with France Football magazine. Meanwhile, in January El Mundo published details of Messi’s current contract, which it said is worth up to 555 million euros over four years. PSG would not need to pay a transfer fee, and Messi — who turns 34 in June — would be joining a club surely better placed in the short term to win the Champions League. “But I want to think about what I want to do in the coming years, where I want to be. According to L’Equipe, PSG expect to lose 204 million euros this season. (Photo by LLUIS GENE / AFP)That remains the nightmare scenario for Barcelona fans, even if their new president Joan Laporta announced following his election victory on Sunday that he was “convinced he wants to stay”. “I have to be careful not to talk about players who are at other clubs,” Pochettino said of Messi in an interview with AFP last week. Leonardo recently said a new deal for the Brazilian was “on the right track”. PSG are rich but are far from immune to the economic crisis hitting football due to the pandemic and also the collapse of France’s domestic television deal. “It’s what I most want,” he told ESPN in December.

Motsepe set to be crowned CAF president

  Guardianng   Today, 3:43 a.m.

the sole candidate, Motsepe said African football needs collective wisdom, “but also the exceptional talent and wisdom of every president of every country and every member association. Speaking at the event, FIFA President, Gianni Infantino, said, “I am delighted that FIFA has been able to contribute, even if just a little, to this crucial moment for football on this great continent. Ahmad was also accused of using CAF money to invite presidents of some national federations on a pilgrimage to Mecca, which was “not directly related to football”. In its ruling on the appeal filed by Ahmad against the November 19, 2020 decision of the Adjudicatory Chamber of the FIFA Ethics Committee, the CAS panel partially upheld the appeal and reduced the length of the suspension to two years, starting yesterday, less the period of suspension already served between November 19, 2020 and January 29, 2021. CAS found Ahmad guilty of ethical violations, including the “distribution of gifts” and “misappropriation of funds”. CAS ruling effectively rules the Malagasy out of contention for CAF’s top job, which he got four years ago when a group of young African football administrators staged a ‘coup’ and ousted Cameroun’s Issa Hayatou. “I am happy to be here with you to celebrate the unity of the African football family. In the presence of FIFA President, Gianni Infantino, several FIFA Council and CAF Executive Committee members, as well as more than 20 presidents of African member associations, the four leaders reiterated that what unites them are much stronger than what could potentially divide them. There are some great challenges ahead, but also great opportunities, and I guarantee FIFA’s support and encouragement to fulfil them, especially in line with FIFA Forward objectives related to infrastructure investment, good governance, development and competitions. “It is a decision that was discussed between the four of us, and the position from the start was to ensure that we go for unity in this election, because we were already tired enough of everything that was said about CAF. But at a ceremony of African unity held at the Palais des Congrès in Nouakchott, Mauritania at the weekend, the four proposed a new direction for CAF and African football for the future. When we all work together with the experience, talent, and passion, football in Africa will experience success and growth that it hasn’t experienced in the past.

Liverpool seek solace in Europe but Leipzig loom

  Guardianng   Today, 3:21 a.m.

Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher labelled the current squad “mentality midgets” — in sharp contrast to the “mentality monsters” moniker previously used by Klopp to describe his team. Klopp’s first season in charge, in 2015/16, ended with Liverpool a lowly eighth in the league, but they were roared on as they battled back from 3-1 down to beat Borussia Dortmund 4-3 in the second leg of their Europa League last-eight tie on their way to the final. Spanish giants were demolished 4-0 in the second leg of the Champions League semi-final, 24 hours after Manchester City landed a vital blow in a titanic title race with Klopp’s men. AFP)Jurgen Klopp’s stumbling English champions will approach Wednesday’s second leg with trepidation — knowing they will not even be at Anfield for the “home” match. Liverpool’s “home” match against Leipzig will be played in the Puskas Arena in Budapest as a result of Covid-19 travel restrictions, the same stadium that hosted the first leg. But the unusual circumstances of this year’s Champions League have robbed the competition of much of its sparkle, with various teams forced to travel to neutral venues for home matches while the public remains locked down in many countries. In 2005, Rafael Benitez’s league also-rans were inspired to thrilling wins over Juventus and Chelsea before producing the greatest comeback in Champions League final history in Istanbul against AC Milan. Liverpool’s dramatic exploits in European competition over the years have been fuelled by the colour, noise and energy provided by fans packed into their famous old stadium. Injuries have played a major role in their dramatic decline, which has left them struggling just to qualify for next season’s Champions League.

Chelsea cruise, West Ham win as top four race hots up

  Guardianng   Today, 2:40 a.m.

They are two points ahead of fifth placed West Ham, who have a game in hand in a tense race to qualify for next season’s Champions League via a top four finish. “If you share special moments and good results, this is the thing that lifts you up to the special performances you need,” Tuchel said. The Blues have kept nine clean-sheets under Tuchel and only their former Italian boss Maurizio Sarri, who went 12 games unbeaten, has enjoyed a better start with the west London club. The 21-year-old has not scored in the league since October, but Tuchel entrusted him with an important role as Chelsea’s false nine and Havertz’s intelligent movement put him in position to earn the second-half penalty that Jorginho converted. “He needs to adapt to the Premier League, he needs to be at a club where you play to win every game, where the highest standards are normal. (Photo by Ian Walton / POOL / AFP)Havertz has endured a disappointing first season following his £70 million ($96 million) move from Bayer Leverkusen last year. But the Germany forward was given a rare start by Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel and he responded by playing the key role in both goals at Stamford Bridge. But they have won four of their last six league games to leave Hammers fans dreaming of a place in Europe’s elite club competition. ”Chelsea are unbeaten in 11 games in all competitions — winning eight times — since Tuchel replaced the sacked Frank Lampard in January. “I’m very happy with his performance, no doubt about his quality, his talent and also his character,” Tuchel said.
